Man Dies in Dana Point After Driving Car Off Cliff

A man was killed Saturday night in Dana Point after authorities say he drove off a cliff on Amber Lantern and plunged 250 feet to his death on Dana Point Harbor Drive. Firefighters and deputies responding to the call found Dennis Donovan, 55, dead at the scene just before 8 p.m. pinned inside his overturned Mercedes.

 

The Orange County Coroner’s office released his name Sunday morning but had not ruled the death an accident or suicide or determined if drugs or alcohol were involved. Officials said Donovan was a transient and had no known home address.

 

A crowd of curious residents congregated at the dead-end of Amber Lantern on Sunday morning, investigating the orange netting and cones blocking off the opening of the bluff top overlook caused by the crash. Crews had cleared all wreckage from Dana Point Harbor Drive by 11 a.m.

Dennis Donovan was my friend, and I am saddened to hear this news. He was an awesome talented jazz bass player who you may see performing with me in videos on youtube. We called ourselves "The Flowers". He had struggled for quite some time with making a way (a living) in music. Very sad. My heart breaks now for his wife of over twenty years.
